maraleen jonker-arangies was born in robertson in 1974. she studied graphic design at the cape town technicon, majoring in illustration. she is currently working & living in stellenbosch. a love for drawing and expressive line work is evident in her art. maraleen prefers to work in large format, using charcoal and mixed media on paper. the inspiration for her work comes from society around us; especially women and their role & place in life, across the diverse cultures of our country. in south africa, we live in a very patriarchal society, with an increasingly high rate of violence against women & children. It infiltrates our minds and affects our behavior. with her art, she explores how that search for a ‘rightful place’ affects our thinking, our sense of self, and psyche.
